Ok, I'm gunning for title of "most useless theory ever" with this one, but I've got a hunch...
Lost has been in answer mode for a while, and they've been coming pretty strong. We should expect some major revelations in the final few hours of Season 5. I suspect (but don't really believe), among them will be that there is no season 6.
WHAT?!?!
Reading the theories here has given me a new appreciation to all the thought that folks put into trying to "solve" Lost. And while I don't claim to have the answers, I do have a feeling that most of you probably have as well. I think most of us know that a full on "sixth-sense" moment is coming where we find out the show we've thought we've been watching religiously isn't really the show at all. It's something completely different and the clues were there but we biased against them. After the final reveal, we'll all need to rewatch the whole thing because it's not the same show we saw the first time.
This show "Lost" is going to end eventually and all the answers (that TBTB plan on giving) will be revealed. Everything on this show is connected, and a single answer (especially the big one) could resolve countless story lines and mysteries. Richard, the Statue, no babies, agelessness, resurrection, smokey... these don't necessarily require 6 different answers. One or two could explain them all, and probably be much more satisfying.
So, my theory is simply: what if we are much closer to that moment than anyone could guess or realize? What if "season 6" is the red herring designed to keep us from realizing we are being spoon fed every drop of info we possibly could need, so that one last answer ties everything together. Lost could very well break the 4th wall at the end of the series to explain everything, and that might include reasons for "faking" the sixth season to keep everyone from knowing when the end is. It will be a much more powerful end to the series if no one even suspects it's coming. It would make the sopranos swan song seem mundane and probably couldn't be duplicated on TV for a generation.
Season 6 might very well be Season 1.
