The statue was not destroyed, it was dismantled by the others to make the cement needed to bury the jughead.
I'm not aware that we were shown the statue in the 50's, and it might very well have been intact at that time. We all assume that the flash to see the statue brought our fearless losties into the distant past, but I find that very hard to believe. Of all of space and time to flash to, every flash still seems to keep everyone in (at the very least) the same century. If they are flashing between the 50's, 70's, 90's, 00's, then all of a sudden it's 2000BCE? Assume it was, what chance does the next flash have of getting them "near" their original timeframe if the flash truly is random?
I don't buy it. I think maybe they flashed to the 40's... they wouldn't need to go any earlier if the statue was used to bury jughead. Without the DHARMA sub, where else are the forest dwelling others going to find the necessary materials to do as Faraday asked?
