This is my first theory and english is not my mother language so please forgive my lack of vocabulary...
I agree with most of you who think that part of Hawkins knowledge about the future comes from Daniel's journal, but I also think she has had access to time travelling...Maybe through Faraday's device (the one he used with Eloise the rat, Theresa and himself) or through the actual island (maybe the Temple?)... This would explain how she knew about the red-shoes guy who died in front of her and Desmond.
Anyway, my point is that after The Variable, I think there is more evidence that THINGS CAN BE CHANGED. Not only for Faraday's speech, but if Eloise knew so much about what was supposed to happen, then why did she and Widmore bothered that much during all those years to make sure Faraday and Desmond ended up on the island?! If they truly believed that WHH and that nothing can be changed, they could just left things to happen for themselves, without their help... But they manipulated both Faraday and Desmond all their lives in order to make them go to the island...
Maybe Widmore and Hawkins knew what would happen, but also feared someone could try to change it, and that's why they actively assured everyone accomplished their mission (Faraday warning them in 1954 to bury the bomb and Desmond not pushing the button in order to crash the Oceanic 815, so that the Losties could travel back to the past and "help" them go ahead with Dharma's purge)...
The Others' primary objective is to keep the island SAFE... no matter what costs (even their own son's sacrifice). This could also explain why the Others allowed the Swan to be built, and even after the purge, let Radinsky, Kelvin and Desmond continue pushing the button...because they knew that this would lead to the Oceanic 815 accident.
Another point to my theory is Hawkins visiting Desmond and Penny in the hospital. Hawkins tells Penny she is sorry that Desmond is a casualty, and that for the first time she doesn't know what is going to happen. And that is because she did not expect Desmond to come and visit her, and neither did Widmore (he looks so surprised when Desmond enters his office and asks for Hawkin's addresss and tells him to stay away after he delivers the message). The Oceanic 6 were not supposed to leave the island, and so Faraday wouldn't have gone to see Desmond to the hatch and ask him to find Eloise. Faraday actually CHANGED something...
In the ORIGINAL timeline that Widmore and Eloise knew about, the O6 were not rescued (Locke also pointed many times that they were not meant to leave the island)... so Faraday was not supposed to go see Desmond to the hatch, and that's why we saw Desmond suddenly waking up on the boat remembering Faraday's visit....He only remembers it after Faraday actually visits him... He did not have that memory in his head since 2000... Unlike Hawkins or Widmore, who have remembered some of the Losties from 1954 during all this time...It has been the first time in the show that something was changed...And it was through Desmond...so I think he is the Variable...And Hawkins knows it, that is why she looks scared at the hospital...She does not know what will happen next because she got proved something actually changed...
And now, what's next?! I really believe Ilana and Bram's group are the new Dharma, who got Chang's warning video about the purge, and are now back to the island to seek for revenge and CHANGE THINGS! Widmore, Hawkins and the rest of The Others' worst fear may actually come true... Maybe that huge trunk Ilana and Bram were moving is a time travelling device, similar to Faraday's own....and that's how they will try to correct things in order to regain control of the island... I have no doubts, things can be changed, otherwise the show would not tell anything, and there has to be a purpose...FREE WILL!! And the WAR will probably be between Dharma and the Others, as it has always been, only with our Losties in the middle!
