This comes from reading this section in this site and my own musings.
First off, there is no time loop, Whatever happened happened, And yes destiny can be changed. But it's all relative as to where in time people are located.
As we saw at the beginning of the season the Island was skipping through time.It seems that the a good metaphor for space time on the island is a record. As we know from physics two points on the same line on a record will move at different relative velocities. In order for the distance between those two points to stay constant they must be moving at different relative velocities I.E a point closer to the center of the record moves slower relative to a point further away because the further point has to move a greater distance in the same amount of time as the closer point.
Now what if that wasn't just physical distance but space-time? Perhaps those in 2007 and the 1970's are connected on the same time line but are moving at different temporal speeds? Now if our losties are specks on that record and the record suddenly stops or something happens to our reference frame (the island)they'll appear to go flyng through time. Perhaps this is how our Losties get flung back to 2007 time after the incident.
The only thing constant in all time periods is the island. Everything the Losties do have to be understood from this time frame. That's why flashback and flashfowards are irrelavant, to the island what happened happened. Our losties are in a different frame of reference. They can't have memories of anything they've changed because they are stuck in a linear 3-D World. They can't be made aware of any temporal changes they've made because they don't have a 4th dimensional reference point.
So how can change happen. in a deleted scene from the variable Daniel explained that small changes wouldn't make an impact but large one can.I think this is were Desmond comes in. Desmond can make the big change because he's been unstuck in time. He's consciousness has moved along his own time line and he has seen things from the 4th dimensional reference point.By simultaneously existing at two moments at the same time he can more precisely control the variables, because he can go back and correct himself seeing how it plays out in the future. This may mean that Desmond will have to unstuck himself again with the help of Penny to keep him sane and alive as he travels to the past to correct things.
What I really want to know is what happened to Daniel's memory. I think most people have jumped to the conclusion that Daniel did it to himself through time travel experimentation but could their be another explanation? Did we make assumptions just because we saw the note that read "Desmond will be my constant"? If Daniel did experiment on himself what time period did he get stuck in? Desmond thought he was in 1996, where did Daniel think he was? During what time periods did he travel? And why didn't Desmond being his constant work? Perhaps this all has to do with the incident. I think we will be seeing more of Mr. Faraday in this last season, at least one more flashback if nothing else.
