Every succeeding season, the show exploits the previous season's mystery.
Season 1 - What is this place? Are there others on the island?
Season 2 - Opens by getting into the hatch, and by circumstance through the season, more of the island as a whole is revealed. The "Others" become more visible, but remain mysterious. Main characters "go home" with the Others.
Season 3 - The entire world of the Others is explored and ends with the destruction of the Others (aka Ben's people). Mysterious freighter may or may not be salvation.
Season 4 - The saga of the Freighter people. Island disappears.
Season 5 - Dealing with the Island moving / consequences for those involved. In the process, we're schooled on Dharma in it's heyday. Explanations abound.
Season 6 - What mysteries remain? Richard. Smokey. Statue. Temple. War. I think Season Five, in a way, sets up the idea that time doesn't have to move in a linear straight line as far as the island is concerned. IMO, Season 6 will be exploring the far past of the island; with the characters going farther back in time to live out their lives.
Even if Jack and others are to "die" in 1977, they could still have a life in the past. Perhaps the coming war is relative to your perception of time? Perhaps the war will have been fought in the past?
