Proving his friend wrong was what Jacob has been trying to do.
I'm going to call his friend TMIB (The Man In Black)
Short & sweet TMIB stated that the Black Rock crew would be like all the others, and fight each other. He indicated that it would end the same as anybody who came to the island, in Chaos, and presumably their deaths, but Jacob brought the Black Rock on anyway, proclaiming is faith in humanity to make progress, and their stumbles as being mere learning experiences.
So they started here, TMIB attempting to find a loop hole to have somebody kill Jacob, and Jacob continuing his work to prevent humanities ultimate implosion from their own inability to keep from destroying themselves.
This ties in well with the idea of the end of the world.
To keep it simple, Jacob worked to bring others to the island, who like Radzinsky said, were working to make a better world. Jacob knew that Humanity would kill itself, but he had faith in them if they would find faith in themselves.
TMIB had no such faith, and felt that killing Jacob would be the easiest way to let fate take its course and let humanity be rid of itself.
So they played a game, bringing people to and from the Island, Jacob trying to influence them to make the world better, TMIB attempting to create a scenerio for one of them to kill Jacob.
Dharma was brought on Jacob's orders to find a solution, but TMIB found one person in Ben who he could use to later help him. He then used John Locke while imprisoning Jacob, and encouraging Ben to stage a coup, to allow Locke to ascend to leadership. Thereafter he got them both off the island, used Ben to kill Locke, assumed Locke's identity, and used Ben to kill Jacob.
But the kicker is that Jacob has a back up plan. His plan was firstly to have faith in humanity saving itself, and he has sacrafised himself, at least in the short term to see that goal fullfilled.
