In the opening scene of "The Incident," as Jacob and the man in black conversed, it seemed as if Jacob were a shore-dweller and the man in black resided in the forest. Jacob lived in the foot of the statue, had set traps to catch fish and had a fire pit prepared; the man in black, however, came out of the trees, had already eaten (presumably a wild boar) and then returns to the jungle.
If the man in black is the smoke monster, which I, as well as many other theorists immediately inferred, then that would explain why the smoke monster has been restricted to the jungle and has never been on the beach (although this can be explained away by the sonic barrier, but what the show has given us geographically that can not be proved either way as of yet). Also, the walls to the temple where it attacked Rousseau's group was also in the middle of the jungle. The cabin, which, according to Ilana, had been lived in by someone other than Jacon (Christian, Claire, the man in back?) would also leave one to believe that the smoke monster/man in black was trapped there in the only place where he would be, that is, the jungle. With that said, the smoke monster (portrayed by the man in black) must come from the jungle and Jacob, it would seem, kicks it by the beach.
In the final shot of that scene, the camera pans left from the full shot of the statue to show the island, and there depicted in the bottom right is the beach (Jacob), the bottom left is the jungle (man in black) and dead center is the mountain, or volcano, which has been alluded to by Olivia in S3 "The Man Behind the Curtain." What if there is a third, or even potential fourth or fifth! (the sea surrounding the island or the Hydra island) native 'entity' actively (or passively) taking part in this game in which the losties are pawns?
-Granted, the volcano is in the jungle and the man in black could be the volcano (black smoke) whose area of expertise is within the jungle.-
Anyway. what if Jacob, who has not been as active as the man in black and therefore had more of an opportunity, learned of another entity's plans and realizes that he can only do so much. What if some of the losties had actually died on the plane (Jack perhaps) and had been re-arisen by one of these entities and is being somewhat controlled by them, also. What are their motives?
What if when an entity 'possesses' one of the characters some of the person is left inside and able to fight back (in an 80's horror movie plot cliché)? What if Locke is able to resist the man in black? What if Jack is really possessed by Jacob or the volcano god (be it the man in black or a third entity) but has been able to make his own decisions instead of the decisions of the possessing entity (as Locke is doing). What if it all comes down to a battle over whether or not humans have free will and can act good in a state of nature (which isthe real John Locke's philosophy) , or if they can be duped into acting badly (as the man in black has been doing).
Only time, if that is to be manipulated, will tell (in season 6).
