Just a short thought here that I was thinking about.
So back in "Man Behind the Curtain", we were lead to believe that was our first 'glimpse' at Jacob. After the opening scene of "The Incident", we can now say for sure that whoever told John Locke to "help" him in the cabin, was not Jacob (in "The Incident", Jacob looks and sounds different than what we saw in MBTC). The man in the cabin was our black shirted friend Esau.
Let me explain: The ash around the cabin is used to contain Esau's spirit (we can infer that he is some sort of spirit/entity seeing as he has commandeered John Locke's body in order to find his loophole and kill Jacob). Ben, when he led Locke to the cabin, was content to simply "put on a show" for Locke and just pass it off as Locke being "too limited to see". When Esau asks Locke to help him, Ben is just as surprised as Locke. Ben was not anticipating actually meeting Jacob in the cabin. Knowing that Locke could talk to Jacob scared Ben enough that he shot Locke and left him for dead. The reason Esau asked John Locke to "help" him is simply because this was the origin of Esau's plan to take over John Locke and use Locke to convince Ben to kill Jacob. In "Follow the Leader" Not-Locke told Richard to tell the then real John Locke that he would have to die to save the island. By doing this, the seed is planted in Locke's head, later watered by Christian Shepard in the FDW cha! mber (perhaps Esau controlled him too?), and what ultimately leads to Locke dying at Ben's hands off the island.
Now at some point, Esau manages to escape the cabin and commandeer John Locke (Esau is NOT the smoke monster, let me just also say that; he is something entirely different). Illana and Bram, when trekking out to the cabin, are not looking for Jacob but are looking for Esau (perhaps an attempt to prevent Jacob's killing by keeping the body of John Locke, all in vain of course). By the time they reach their actual destination (the 4-toed statue) it is too late to prevent Jacob's death as Esau has already committed the act.
To sum it up, Esau was the one being contained in the cabin, not Jacob. Jacob always lived inside the statue. Locke spoke to Esau not Jacob in MBTC, and "help me" always meant Esau's plan to evetnually use John Locke to kill Jacob.
