A long time ago the well known philosopher Plato wrote in his dialogues Timaeus and Critias of an island that was great in size and advanced in culture. He wrote of a utopia that was lost in a single day and night of 'misfortune'and that sunk into the depths of the sea.
The city was called Atlantis, and has been the most well known legend of a lost civilization in modern culture.
By the end of season four it was pretty clear to me that either the Island is in fact Atlantis, or that these two lost islands share similarities but I'm a fool who reads too into the show. But I'd like to think I'm right for now. I think that Plato saw, or spoke of, exactly what we saw at the end of Season Four when Ben turned the donkey wheel and moved The Island. And the hieroglyphics that keep popping up in the show, and that were riddled all about the place in The Others' temple seem to be pretty old.
So how does Egyptian culture and language end up on a Pacific Island so long ago? As we found out about the Beechcraft, the Island was probably in a location close to it. Which would put it in the Mediterranean or just outside of it, which is where Atlantis was suspected to be. And perhaps after the Egyptians who went to Atlantis (I guess now Atlantians) had inhabited this island they built the donkey wheel. But what ancient civilization was advanced enough to not only play around with, but completely utilize to their advantage a branch of physics the outside world had not even pondered until after Albert Einstein published his papers on General and Special Relativity in 1911?
Well the the civilization of Atlantis was said to be very advanced, harnessing technology the rest of the outside world hadn't even dreamed of and conquering countless countries because of it. And perhaps they did disappear as Plato said they did, but instead of cataclysm, it was at their own ends that they sank into the ocean.
Because The Island jumped through time and space, they might have ended up anywhere in any coordinate which makes it very reasonable for the Black Rock to be suddenly sailing in the ocean, only to find itself in the middle of the Jungle the next. Later on the Dharma Initiative somehow found the Island (probably through Charles Widmore) and began conducting experiments in physics and probably other less important branches. But this is my theory about what exactly The Island is: It is Atlantis. And the original inhabitants can only be described as Antlanteans. But what is the smoke monster? Why is Christian suddenly alive on the island? How does it heal people? How is it possible that Locke, like Christian, can be dead and then live again? And why are some of the people aboard Oceanic flight 815 so connected? I suppose some questions only the show can answer, and I really hope they answer all of them.
