The season 5 finale opened suddenly with what most thought would lie at the end of the episode. Jacob, living at the shadow of the statue by himself waiting for the Black Rock to set sail upon the island. However this three minute scene reveals who the true players in the story are. Jacob was given a legitimate face, and the other side of the "war" was also given a face but no name. Many of the evidence provided by Black Shirt's guy's character and Lost's recurrent allusion point the guy's name to Esau. It is between Esau and Jacob where lost is headed and the war has always been, it was never Ben and Widmore.
A little bit about Esau. Esau was Jacob's brother who in the bible was a hunter and more of a ruffian, while Jacob was a shy and simple man. The difference between Jacob and Esau was Jacob became the heir of the promises of Abraham (gen 27:37). "Esau, naturally, is furious and vows to kill Jacob" (gen 27:41). This is directly parallel to the life we know of Jacob as the leader of the island and Esau's said intent of wanting to kill Jacob very urgently in the beginning of the episode.
Another important conversation that can be analyzed between Jacob and Esau (I will be referring to BSG as Esau), is the way Esau tells Jacob, "They come, fight, they destroy, they corrupt, it always ends the same". In which Jacob provides a more hopeful tone in saying "your wrong" and that anything that happens before is progress. From this conversation it is likely that these two brothers are at odds with their belief in the people in the island and whether they can truly be at harmony with the island. Which many times is not the case as we several events of dissension between Dharma, losties, and even the others. This is perhaps one of the ideas/themes of lost, the inherent nature of Man. Is Man's nature forever doomed to corrupt and destroy? Esau obviously thinks so and Jacob definitely does not agree. He has left a few safeties to make sure that the good still happens. As we can see, one of these is calling the Black Rock to the Island, and the other very importan! t factor is the Losties we know and love.
The Black Rock is one of Jacob's paths to saving himself or proving Esau wrong as Esau pointed out. One of the explanations that can result in this is the commonly accepted theory that Richard Alpert was on the Black Rock. This seems likely as Richard is allowed to see Jacob and transfer letters to the leader of the others. Therefore solidifying his place as a person who is working for Jacob to ensure that Jacob's plans go into effect.
The other assurance that we see from part of Jacob's side is Ilana and crew, but most importantly Jack and friends. Jacob visited all of the Oceanic 6 (san Aaron),Sawyer, Locke etc., because they are all pivotal in his side of the war between him and his brother. The losties in 1977 allow them to possibly change the history of everything that happened therefore disallowing Ben to kill Jacob.
So whose on Esau's side? Ben. It seems throughout Ben's arrival back in the island Esau manipulated Ben to have the loophole to be able to kill Jacob. Esau changing into Ben's daughter made sure that he would follow his own order's of killing Jacob.
Esau who manifested as Locke, was probably able to manifest as Ben's Daughter, smokey, Kate's Horse, Eko's brother, the list goes on and on. If Esau has the power to manifest himself as Locke, then he must be the smokey monster who manifested himself throughout the various season of the show. It's also a possibility that Esau may have manifested himself as Christian (maybe Claire aas well) though it is less likely.
These two people are the opposing forces in the Island The smokey Monster has been present since Episode 1(I believe?) and acted as a terrifying enemy, and was most definitely a foreshadow of who is the enemy in Lost. Jacob has on his side, Locke, Jack, Sawyer, and so on to prove Esau wrong that people on this earth do not always "Corrupt and Destroy". Esau only has his bitterness and greed.
