Hey,
I've been a longtime reader but never contributed to your site before. Well, I was thinking about the finale and I think I may have an idea as to what is the deal with Jacob. I remember reading a while back about an Egyptian god who was cut into pieces and they had to be re-collected in order to resurrect him. After watching tonight's episode, and seeing Jacobs response to Ben of "So what about you?", I thought to myself, why in the world would Jacob let himself be killed? Then it dawned on me, he wanted Ben to murder him. You see, here's my theory. He touched each of our losties during his visit with them, whether it was handing them a candy bar or a pen, or just a simple flick on the nose, he made contact with them. It is my theory that he placed in each of those he touched a part of his soul. Sort of like, if you read it, the last Harry Potter book, where Voldemort had sealed his soul into 7 items and 1 into Harry himself (I think, memory may be a little fuzzy on the deta! ils). He CAN be ressurected, only by those people gathering together, all those lists of good and bad, it all would make sense. It is my thinking that what Damon and Carlton did was to take this ancient story about Osiris, and perhaps some influence from HP, and created a modern day tale about it. The other thing I noticed about Jacob as well, right from the start is that he is a weaver, and what have we learned if nothing about our losties? Their lives are interwoven, perhaps because of Jacobs protection and influence in their lives, to keep his soul safe?
I also wanted to add a comment on Jacobs words at the beginning of how, "There is only one end, everything else is just progress". That makes me think that Jacob knows that the world is going to end and so everything is perhaps somewhat petty to him? And perhaps the man in black is so obsessed with proving to him that there is only violence and infuriated by Jacobs /eh attitude towards it that he becomes the very monster he is trying to defeat, by killing Jacob. Who knows?

PS: Also, while I am submitting this, I wanted to share a song with you guys that reminds me of Lost. Sorry if it's not to your tastes but it feels like the theme song of last season.
