I believe that Widmore lied to Daniel when he claimed responsibility for the airliner wreck. Even though he said Daniel wouldn't remember, I believe he was 'being extra careful to mention the wreck because of Daniel's tear filled reaction to the news on the tv.
Why? Well, no offense to the WHH crew, but I am a fan of the loop-paradox scheme of things and I believe, because of several things I've seen on the show including Ellie's speech on destiny to Desmond and the man with red shoes, Desmond's encounter with Charlie on a rainy street corner, the Compass... And therefore I think that the entire show is a paradox crying for repair... that the original timeline/loop was the one where everyone dies and that in subsequent tries, over and over, because some of the losties aren't in the right place at the right time, a terrible disaster happens on the island, or perhaps the entire world.
I see the island as the only place in creation where other threads/strands/loops of time are accessible and where the others keep trying to get a solution that prevents total disaster. The best try so far has been with our losties being drawn to the island. Maybe they were only 'moveable' because they all died. Little things change, but still disaster falls. Trying over and over must be very heartbreaking for those who 'remember', most of all someone like Daniel who should have been a musician and has been turned into super genius physicist number one son.
I believe that Daniel's managed to make the one change already, by finding 'special' Desmond and making sure he gets the plane to crash on the island, saving many of the passengers, where the island can preserve some of the 'variables' for further attempts at repair or redemption of the original mistake.
Ok, cut to the chase, why does this connect with Widmore lying? Because he believes, or knows that if Daniel thinks the only outcome he can get by changing the events that brought the losties to the island is for them to all die in the sea, he might break for good and stop trying. Daniel needs to believe that the opposite of the incident equals safe plane landing. So Widmore tells him the plane wreck is a fake and sends him to try once more.
Maybe this time it will work... after all, this time, some losties are in 1977... and Daniel knows when he sees the picture that's something new. And this time, Jack believes Daniel.
So who else can't wait till tomorrow?
