I think we may have enough pieces of the puzzle to finally deduce what or who JACOB really is...
First off, the answer is staring at us right in the face (literally, if you remember that we saw ONE of Jacob's eyes in the cabin when Hurley and Locke encountered him). Here's the thesis of the theory as to why neither Ben nor Locke will kill Jacob:
**Jacob is a child. A baby. A teenager. An adult. An old man. All of these things wrapped into one. Why? B/C this season is all about Time and we've seen different versions of people (Widmore, Charlotte, Eloise, Miles, ect.) throughout the 70s/present-day (the answer is right here!!!). Jacob is no exception! (Why should he be? He's on the Island.) Jacob is both bounded by Time but can also move "through it" as we saw him try to show Locke in "The Man Behind the Curtain". The cabin is Jacob's vessel through time. I suspect that JACOB WAS ACTUALLY DEAD (as in dead is dead) the first time we saw him. The cabin moved through time just enough to show Locke that he WAS REALLY A HUMAN. Ergo, the circle of ashes -- which constrains Jacob from moving the whole damn Island everytime he summons the leader of the Others to visit him. **
WHY BEN AND LOCKE WON'T KILL JACOB: Ben wouldn't kill baby Alex but would sacrifice teenage Alex. Locke is reluctant to kill anyone except for the people he "needs" to kill to protect the Island (e.g. Naomi). Recall that Locke felt responsible for killing Boone but later realized that he was a "sacrifice the island demanded" (which was true in the long run - it helped Locke find his "purpose").
To sum this up, remember what Faraday tells Sawyer back in the premiere when they go to see Desmond at the SWAN: "Think about it, it could be anyone in there". The same goes for Jacob -- he literally can be anything (or anyone) because of the time shifts viz. the wheel turning everytime the Island is under siege.
