It's the mystery that's stumped me the most this season: why were Sun, Locke, and Ben left out of the timeflashing when Ajira 316 landed on the island.
When the timeflashes started, the only people to timeflash were the Losties and the freighter folks -- "outsiders". The Others stayed put.
It's plausible that Ben didn't flash back in time from Ajira 316 because he was an Other, too. If someone else had pushed the FDW in 2004, and Ben was standing with Richard when the Losties disappeared, Ben still wouldn't have gone back with them. He's an Other by Temple resurrection.
Locke didn't flash back from Ajira 316 either because he was dead (and like Charlotte, the dead don't flash back); or because he became an Other the same way Ben did, by resurrection.
The Others are impervious to time travel.
So that leaves only Sun, and my theory is simply that Sun is an Other by birth. Her parents off-island (Paiks) would be like Widmore and Eloise, and in fact are friends (or business associates) with Widmore, which makes the theory at least somewhat plausible.
Plus there was Colleen, who somehow seemed to know Sun, even though we know now that it wasn't because Sun timeflashed to the past to become known by the Others.
