The evil John Locke (than man with Jacob in the opening scene) has been running things since the start of the show and controlling what the characters did. He had to find a loop hole to kill Jacob and take control of the island. So his spirit has been controlling the action so every dead character we have seen on the island has been him and he has been manipulating everything.
He said he had to do a lot of things to find the loop hole so Locke being ever searching for his purpose has been carrying out this evil spirits wishes thinking he was doing good for the island. The spirit needed him to die and be returned to the island so he could inhabit his body, which everyone expected and thought to be just Locke reincarnated while it was really this evil thing. This allowed the evil thing to trick Ben into feeling unloved by Jacob and tricking Ben to kill Jacob which the evil thing can not do himself. That is why Jacob was shown time traveling to meet up with the others so they carried out their part to get to the island and Illana to find the body of Locke to alert Richard that things were not as they seemed.
So evil Locke comes back and makes sure to tell himself the things he did and have Richard do it so that Locke's dead body would come back so he could inhabit it. So now we will have a battle for the island where evil Locke will be against team Richard. the time travelers will return and be with Locke cause Jack is convinced that Locke was right before ultimately having a showdown for control and restore order
