Crikey! My head is spinning and my heart is racing after watching what surely must be the most jaw dropping and awesome episode(s) of Lost yet. I have too many ideas crashing around in my head to even know where to start but feel I must release some of the exotic matter building up inside brain to avert an ‘incident’.
One thing that I have managed to pin down is the glimmer of hope given to us in the scene where Jacob visits Locke after his 8 storey fall. We open this scene with a close up on the book that Jacob is reading ‘Everything That Rises Must Converge’ by Flannery O’Connor. The book, according to wikipedia aims ‘to expose the sinful nature of humanity that often goes unrecognized in the modern, secular world’. From what we can tell from the opening scene between Jacob and ‘Black Shirt’, this notion seems to be more in line with ‘Black Shirts’ stance on human nature: "They come, fight, they destroy, they corrupt. It always ends the same".
More interestingly however is the cover of the book; a flying dove being pierced by an arrow. Notice how when the camera pulls back the arrow is directed at Jacob’s heart – the same spot where Ben stabs him. At this point Locke falls to the ground behind Jacob. Of course iconography and character knowledge are two entirely different things but Jacob not your standard character and he knows ‘things’. I believe that that this scene tells us that Jacob knows about Locke’s destiny and the events leading up to his own death. The calm manner in which he accepts (and indeed to some extent provokes) Ben killing him suggests he knew what to expect. He knows that ‘Black Shirt’ will become Locke 02 and his apology, “I’m sorry this happened to you” is for so much more than Locke’s tragic life up until this point. As a side point I also think that Locke was dead/near dead before Jacob touched him on the shoulder, as was Illana.
The glimmer of hope is in his words to Locke: “Don’t worry. Everything’s going to be alright”. I don’t think that this was said just in regards to Locke’s immediate injuries. I think that this is a clear sign that Jacob is firmly in the driving seat and has a clear plan of action to right the wrongs.
I don’t know where Season 6 is going to lead us. I have more questions than ever before about what is going on, but I do believe that ‘everything’s going to be alright’.
