supposing the four-toed statue is Taweret (egypian godess of pregnancy - and later mistress of evil -- who happens to have four toes), this would make the senario more interesting. Taweret was depicted as a composite of all the things the Egyptians feared, and became seen very early in Egyptian history as a deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnant women wore amulets with her name or likeness to protect their pregnancies. Her image could also be found on knives made from hippopotamus ivory, which would be used as wands in rituals to drive evil spirits away from mothers and children. According to egyptian mythology, Taweret mated Apep, the egytian god of Evil - a long snake that resided beneath the horizon (for some reason does smokey come to mind?). As Apep was thought to live in the underworld (under the horizon), he was sometimes thought of as an Eater-up of Souls. Apep would fight with Ra (god ! of the sun) at night (sun set on mountains where it was said Apep was lying in wait). Apep could use a "magical gaze" to hypnotise Ra, so Ra had a harem to help him with Apep - the chief protector of Ra was the god Set (man with jeckyl head). Why all this?
under the temple where ben encountered the smoke monster, the hiroglyphics showed the god Set encountering the monster, which on the hiroglyphics looks a lot like Apep does in hiroglyphics. With a giantstatue of pregnant Taweret on the island decapitated, this could symbolize Apep's current upper hand in the battle, and the pregnancy problems on the island.
