Ok here's my theory. The reason the losties can't change anything in the past is because what ever actions they decide to take they already took We are looking at things as if they can change what happened because they have knowledge of the future and can therefore attempt to change the eventual outcomes. The thing that we are failing to aknowledge is that they always did have that future knowledge and the decisions they are making now (Jack not helping save little Ben) is what he always did because he always thought that was going to change something. So whatever Happened DID and will happen....Unless....
Now my theory is that the only way what happened can be changed is if someone with the knowledge of what happened causes one of the losties to do something different this time around. Eg. Had Desmond been present when Ben got shot he may of had a flash of Jack not helping him and therefore could tell Jack that he SHOULD help him in order to change things. Now the big question is would fate allow someone with this type of knowledge travel back to a time that they already have knowledge of?? Maybe Jacob is trapped because he tried to do this and became trapped in time by fate to prevent him from changing the past? Thats another theory in itself tho.
