I see things two ways. Either (A) things are screwed up and need fixed or (B) things were screwed up and we're watching the fixing in progress.
A-Some indications something is wrong and needs fixed:
1. Eloise talking about saving the world.
2. Eloise mentioning "God help us all" if they don't get back.
3. Goodspeed caught in that time loop.
4. Serious anomalies like the compass and the well.
5. Some people seem to know what's going to happen and some do know what's going to happen.
B-Some indications things are being fixed:
1. The repeated statements that Desmond is special
2. The urgency of Hawking to get these people back.
3. If they're not being fixed now, what is the reason for all the hubub about getting the O6 back?
4. Jack's complete turnaround from science to faith.
5. Eloise mentioning "God help us all" if they don't get back
If it's A, then what is screwed up? I say all of human history. It's that rope sticking out of the ground in ancient times. It forces the rest of the world to follow a path leading to Ben turning the FDW. It's why the Valenzetti equation is so grim. Someone, somehow, discovered this (the DeGroots? Valenzetti??) and embarked on a path to fix it. I think that rope is a very serious issue. It caused the island to go from being a local, anomalous situation to being a global one.
(A) explains many mysteries ranging from people not being able to die or kill themselves to Desmond not pushing the button soon enough to stop 815 from crashing. It explains why there's been so much talk of destiny and what one's "supposed" to do. It explains the non-chalant attitude some have about killing people.
It doesn't explain Smokey, Richard, or Jacob.
The compass thing was local, other than it led to sending Richard to Ben's birth and Locke creating his own destiny. This is problematic but does not encompass all of human history like the rope does.
If it's B, then we should eventually see a clear intervention where what happened doesn't happen. There have been indications of this in relation to Desmond. He still has to save the world. His direct encounter with the electromagnetic anomaly gives him the ability to use the properties of it freely.
It explains some of the subtle things like moving bullet wounds and changing dialogue in multiple flashbacks. These kind of things might indicate something is changing or changeable.
The war might just be the island vs human freedom wrenching itself from the island's tight grip on humanity. Or, it might be the forces fighting for B (fixing it) against those fighting for A (trying to keep things as they are). Theory by Tsar Bomba
