In season four, there were a few references to the island "not allowing" certain things to happen - alluding to the possibility that the characters' fates were perhaps already determined. I've realized why that isn't just some all-powerful island bull.
The reason why Jack couldn't kill himself; why Michael couldn't be killed by Keamy or even himself; why they could not change this supposedly set-in-stone future...was because their future was actually the past.
If Jack were to kill himself in 2007, he couldn't join Dharma in the 70s, could he? And if Michael were to die, wouldn't that mean he didn't stave off the C4 in the freighter, and wouldn't that affect events that lead up to Jack joining Dharma, in the past? You're right, it would.
So you see, there might an explanation to fate in Lost that is purely logistics. It seems that backwards time travel is what secures our heroes fates in seasons 1-4. And now that they're back in time in S5, we all know that nothing ahead of them can be changed (pending some backstepping on the logical rules Faraday/TPTB have put in place) and so again we have a sense of fate and of the inevitable moving this story forward.
I suppose this is purely a time travel theory, that applies outside of Lost. Assuming the understood rules apply...if at any point in time, someone travels back in time...the time leading up to the point where they traveled back in time cannot be changed. Seems pretty logical.
