I wanted to analyze the egyptian imagery in the Temple to see if it may shine some light on the nature of the smoke monster. It is pretty clear that the image shows Anubis and the Smoke Monster. First of all, this is a definite sign that smoke monster is very old, and has been around for centuries.
Did anybody notice that Anubis is kneeling in front of the monster in the image? After a quick search, I came up with this: "Anubis is shown here in the "Praise and Glorification" pose known as the "Henu" pose. Anubis and sometimes Horus are often shown in this pose where they salute the rising sun each dawn. The Egyptians didn't worship the animals, but the forces of nature that they symbolized. Anubis, God of the Dead, represented with a head of a jackal or simply as a jackal opened the road to the other world and presided over embalmments. After a funeral, Anubis would take the deceased by the hand and introduce him into the presence of the sovereign judges where the soul of the deceased would be weighed. Anubis was the Guardian of Offerings brought to the ceremony by heirs of the deceased and he also guarded the mummy from evil forces in the night. When the body was embalmed, a priest wearing a jackal mask acted as Anubis's representative. He also was the guardian of the! Sacred Esoteric Mysteries. The origin of this God lay in the fact that jackals could be heard howling in the desert to the west of the Nile at sunset-at the time when burials took place." http://www.aurorahistoryboutique.com/S000174.htm
So, is Anubis saluting the monster in this case? It sure looks like he is kneeling in front of it. Maybe smoke monster is a sovereign judge that weighs the souls? It seems to me that it might be.
There is a lot of other symbolism in the image. The snake may symbolize Kebechet - "Goddess who personified the purification through water. Daughter of Anubis, Kebechet plays an important role in the funeral cult. Her appearance is that of a snake." Water plays a big role in the show. The island is surrounded by water, it rains a lot, there is a mysterious well that Locke descends into before getting off the island, Ben drains the water behind the mysterious door to summon the monster, people are always drinking water from bottles, etc. I've never seen any other show that shows so many plastic water bottles. They are everywhere. So, is the island's water purifying and possibly healing? Did you see Ben picking up a plastic Ajira water bottle and drinking from it on the beach while talking to Cesar? He was on his way to get judged. Theory by Julia S.
