After watching "Dead Is Dead" we may think water activates the smoke monster because of the scene were Ben goes into the mini temple in his house and "sinks the toilet" but I don´t think that way.
I think that toilet it´s in fact a CV, a Cerberus Vent, and water keeps the Smoke Monster away. That´s why it can´t leave the island and that´s why we´ve never seen him or an incarnation of him near the beach (assuming Christian is NOT the smoke monster).
So, smokey it´s trapped inside the temple and the only way to release him it´s by "sinking the toilet" in Ben´s house.
Why we´ve never thought why smokey stays in the island and never leaves? Of course it´s protecting something but, maybe it can´t leave because of the water surrounding the island.
Now im asking myself... ¿Did Ben send the smoke monster to get john Locke in season 1 or the monster did it himself?
