Hi,
my theory is that the time travelling isn't a one-way street. Its also possible to travell to the future. Ben and Widmore did this some time ago. They travelled to a time not very far (Lets say 2015). There they saw:
1. themselves
2. Locke
First thing means they can't kill each other, because they have to live to be at their places in the future. Cause its not only "Whatever happened, happened", its "Whatever will happen, will happen", too. That would explain, why Ben "always has a plan". He knows he will be save in the future, so nothing can happen to him now.
Thats what Ben means by saying "I broke the rules" in the promo to "Dead is dead". He killed Locke, knowing he cant do this, cause Locke lives in the future.
My guess is, that the season final of season 5 is the scene in the future where Ben and Charles see Locke. The final season leads to that moment. In one of the last episodes, this time will come. From that moment on, Ben and Charles aren't the special people knowing more than anyone else. From that moment on, they have the same knowledge as everyone else.
Feel free to criticize ;-). Theory by Hypnos
