First off, I want to start by saying that I think the producers of this show are just killing it this season and how great I feel things are shaping up for the conclusion of this manic train ride. I just absolutely loved how in Jack's refusal to save Ben's life he believed he was serving the greater good and in that decision is what actually caused Linus to turn into the manipulative evil genius that we all know and love, it was Jack's non-intervention that caused "whatever happened, happened". I felt that was a brilliant plot twist also not to mention that if Kate had never taken and raised Aaron and if Sawyer had never lived in Dharmaville they both would of remained as the opposites that felt compelled to go to the extreme to save a life they new would turn evil - it was the island that released Kate and Sawyers motherly and fatherly instincts which without would also of never caused "whatever happened, to h! appen". That Jack, Kate, and Sawyers future on and off-island was responsible for Ben's revival in the past - JUST BRILLIANT!!!
But anyway I digress.
There were a couple monumental events that transpired in last nights ep that I believed helped open up some of the mystery behind the island, and more interestingly the temple. The first being how Sawyer made it a point to say "where did you come from" to Richard who seemingly just appeared out of nowhere, I think it is safe to assume at this point that Richard is a spirit, maybe a resurrected individual just as Locke is and as a result of the offering Richard made he is now forever tied to the island, in what capacity exactly, we don't know just yet but it is very easy to speculate why - he is there for guidance to certain individuals or events, he is the all-time protector, he is a representative of the dark side of the island, there are a lot of directions you can take when thinking about Richards role, one I think is of most importance at this particular point b/c he holds the answers to the most important questions we have about the island and the Temple.
Anyway, the temple may be a gateway to the underworld. I believe the same type of power, not saying necessarily the Devil or Satan, but something inside the Temple has the ability to return life to an individual but for a price - think of the song " The devil went down to Georgia" and how this person was confronted by the devil in a moment of extreme desperation and in exchange for the ability to play the guitar like one crazy motha he had to offer up his soul as payment, and did. Just as Ben will have to offer up his soul in exchange for new life and that is why Richard made a point to say it was a decision that Ben needed to make b/c otherwise it is overstepping the bounds and imposing upon free will, but being as Ben was half dead at the time Kate and Sawyer made the decision for him. The experience Ben will go through inside the Temple removing his innocence (now we know why Ben kills so callously and disregard for life in general) will forever tie him to the island ! also, at that point he became one with the island. I use to think that Ben was always looking out for HIS best interest and agenda but after seeing last nights ep, I think he has always looked after this higher powers best interest - and a part of me really wants Ben to be working up to a point where he can end his own life undoing the things he has done b/c he was never given the choice to be the person he turned out to be b/c someone else made the decision for him - that would be an awesome scenario to play out, all a long Ben was the good guy, wouldn't be a great twist. I think when Richard first came to the island, insert your own theory as to how Richard came to be there, he was confronted in a time of extreme desperation by this same force and chose everlasting life in exchange and that is why he seemingly never ages, although why a few times we've seen Richard talking to young Ben was his hair long and he had a beard?.....Don't understand that b/c every other time! we've seen him he was clean cut and shaved, anyway off topic.!
The temple represents the dark side (evil) of the island and Jacob represents the light (good) and the reason why he is trapped in the cabin was so that evil could prevail on the island rather than good - why? I can't answer that question. It think this episode defined this show as being about good versus evil rather than Ben versus Widmore which also will play directly into the good versus evil story line. Both are defenders of one side, who for what side, I don't know. Theory by Brnt!
