I know the producers have said multiple times that the Island isn’t purgatory but I think its actually Hell. The producers have intertwined science fiction and time travel to the story of good vs. evil. Season 5 has arguably had the most biblical references of seasons past. Christian (the producers do enjoy irony) and Jacob could be manifests of Satan/Hell and the Hostiles are members of this society. The final battle that is coming is the battle of good vs. evil or black vs. white.
In most cases you can divide our survivors from those who are good and bad: Sayid, Kate (killed her father), Sawyer (conman), Sun (adultery), Jin (was a hitman for Mr. Paik) you could argue are on the ‘black’ team. Jack, Locke, Hurley, Juliet (I think she was tricked into becoming an other), Claire, Charlie, Rose, Bernard, Walt, Michael (who actually turns to the ‘dark side’ while on the island) would be considered the ‘white’ team. The other survivors on the black team; Ana Lucia, Eko, Nikki, and Paulo have died while on the Island and the white team, Libby, Dr. Artz, etc. were killed because of course correction. They were supposed to die in the plane crash. Additionally, Frank was always supposed to be the pilot of flight 815. Through course correction, he’s flying flight 316. The smoke monster, as seen with Eko and Locke, judges people. Eko was killed (black team) and Locke (white team) survived. When Danielle’s team went into Smokey’s hole, they were e! xposed to the island’s evil and became ‘sick’. Danielle had to kill them to save herself and Alex.
I think this is why women are unable to give birth on the island. Even though Jack and Claire are Christian’s children and he is a representative of Hell, they are still born with the chance to choose their fate (fate vs. free will). Aaron, Alex, and Ethan are the exceptions so far and we know Ethan becomes a Hostile, Ben takes Alex and I think Claire sacrificed herself for Aaron. By ‘going to the dark side’, Claire was able to save Aaron and get him off the Island and if you remember Kate’s dream, Claire said, “Do not bring him back!”.
In this past episode, “Whatever Happened, Happened”, we know Ellie (Ms. Hawking) and Charles are leaders of the Hostiles (Black Team) and although Richard says he doesn’t answer to them we know they are all on the same team in 1977. Charles and Ellie (Ms. Hawking) are now off the Island and apparently on different sides. I think Ellie and Ben are still on the black team and helps those who either deserve to be on the Island (hell) or those who wish to go there, get back to the Island. For example, Kate, Sayid, and Sun deserve to be on the Island. Charles Widmore (who repents and is expelled from hell) does this for the white team: Locke, Charlotte, Miles, and Daniel. The wild cards are Jack, Desmond, and Hurley. I think the reason Jack is there is to affect the final outcome. As Christian’s son, he’ll have a major role in how things end up. Hurley is probably the most innocent of all survivors and will have a place in the final outcome. Desmond is a mystery. In ei! ther case, Ellie and Charles need all the original members of flight 815 to be on the Island when the ‘final battle’ comes.
The purpose of the DI is to stop or change the outcome of the war. Due to the Purge, the DI is wiped out and the Hostiles take over the Island. By Desmond not entering the numbers, he’s caused 815 to crash on the Island, thereby changing the game. He’s given the ‘white team’ a shot at changing the outcome.
In summary, I think the battle that is coming is the “final” battle of good vs. evil for the soles of mankind. The Island is a version of Hell/Hades and Christian, Jacob, Ben, the Hostiles are the representatives of this sect. In contrast, Widmore, Jack, Hurley, and company are on the opposite side and in my opinion they will win the war. Theory by Lori Meyers
