Ok seeing all that we saw before, seeing all the info about egypt, and other using latin let me recap and organize what we know so far:
-Richard is ageless
-Jacob has some inhuman superpowers, he could be send to cure cancer of Juliet sisters and my guess he is responsible for ressurections on the island.
-Others speak latin, becouse it is the language of the enlightened. So that probably meens the first inhabitants of the island were of roman descent, since latin is a dead language.
-From history we know that egypt was from year 30BC onwards for nearly 7 decades was under roman and then greek rule.
-Egyptians believed in eternal life on earth.
-In year 200 Christianity spread all over egipt, the "Old" religion has diminished.
-The temple of the island looks as if it is from egyptian origin.
-The smokey, the guardian system is named cerberus in one of the episodes. The word is from latin/greek origin.
Ok so what does all tell us ?

Richard - ever wondered why he has eyeliner and rather looks like a gigalo ? The lost writers never do something for no reason. And the fact why richard looks as he looks is most probably becouse he is from Egyptian origin. That would mean he is one of the ancients and is probably atleast 2000 years old. This is only basing it on his looks, and if you look at a picture of a egiptian guy from the ancient times youll understand why is it a strong point for me:

This guy looks exactly like richard ! Eyeliner, dark hair and thick eyebrows.
What more to conclude this theory - Richard knows everything about the island, he doesnt anwser to anyone. He could contact Jacob, he was the person who brought the others to the island. I think he makes sure that things happen the way they should happen and doesnt reveal his true identity even to the others. He probably went of the island to recruit worthy people and then brought them back to island to teach them what the island is really about and to help him achieve some goal. He is the man in the middle, he lets the others choose other leaders, but he does what he wants.
The others - they speak latin and they always choose atleast 2 leaders. Widmore and Ellie, Richard and Ben. The people who had 2 leaders to ballance power were romans when they were a republic.
Smoke monster- called cerberus by the ancients who spoke latin, as they knew that a guardian system guarding the styx river was cerberus.
Okey so now to sum up a bit - I think the island was a place that was home to some kind of egiptian religion, where people lived peacefully. When romans invaded egypt they probably found a way to the island and there was a war with the first inhabitants. They destroyed the statue, and they killed the egiptians taking over the island. Probably richard and Jacob were the only ones left that survived. Maybe some more, but who knows what the writers will come up with. So richard was probably a lowly priest or some other kind of non important person. But Jacob on the other hand was probably the high priest that was ruling the island. As egiptians were good at decieving peasants into what they want them to believe, i think jacob found a way of using all the powers connected with the island and was believed a semi god. After the romans killed the egyptians, jacob had his revenge and spared only a handfull of them. They accepted him as their leader and went on with their life. Proba! bly someone from O6 or from the others travelled from the future to that time, and revieled some big mystery to what is going to happen in the future and told the people what they must do to stop it, or make it happen. And so now with a mission ahead of them, Jacob/Richard went to work....
Thats why people who go into the temple loose their innocence - they learn what the island and its purpose is, maybe there is an artifact that transfers a whole lot of knowlegde into their heads. Or maybe it makes them servants of Jacob. Eighter way when they learn the truth the now do everything to protect the island.
So it seems that the statue is of some egiptian god that richard and Jacob were serving... There might be a twist and maybe it was a statue of Jacob and HE was actually an avatar come to life on the island of some egiptian god himself... Theory by Sonar
