Here's my theory and how the island (and show thereof) is based on science versus religion and how this conflict has determined (based on human interactions) the chain of events which I believe will explain why Ben had to do all that he has done including the purge.
The others being the natural habitants of the island knew of the mystical powers the island beheld, maybe not so much about time travel (maybe at least the possibility of it) but definitely the healing and supernatural abilities, the smoke monster, the Temple and it's purpose, the ancient society and so on. Basically they know the island is a pure highly unique entity that must be preserved and protected at all costs by any measure, so by some "however" the Dharma Initiative came to find, set up and establish camp, discover and develop the unique properties of the island through research and basically learn from a scientific perspective how to harness and control the energy.
The Others to a certain degree allowed this to happen, they allowed Dharma to experiment but I believe they took it too far, they went beyond their allotted section of the island because they discovered some energy source to manipulate (i.e. why the hatch and Swan was built). Dharma was given an inch and they took a mile so when the Others learned what they were doing they knew they had to shut it down, hence the purge. I believe the main reason the purge was necessary was because of the incident that Dharma caused, I believe it was the nature of the incident that made this inevitable, time travel. D.I. would of used this power for their own good and not the islands. We know that Dr. Marvin Candle created a time loop paradox (reappearing #15 bunnies), which in the mind of the others was not kosher with the design or beliefs that was handed down from this ancient society centuries ago. The island is or was created for a higher more spiritual purpose and what the Dharma I! nitiative was discovering and potentially going to use this power for is not in the best interest of the island and therefore could compromise it’s entire existence and possibly the existence of all life as we know it.
I think by Ben’s reinsertion back to the D.I. after his healing session inside the Temple he learned from Dr. Marvin Candle how to use the time traveling rooms he created (sorry don’t remember the station but the one with the rooms your not supposed to put metal in, the station with the traveling bunnies experiment). I think these rooms were created with Daniel Faradays help (or total creation) allowed to transport or project a persons mind or body into the near future, similar to how Daniel was able to do with Eloise the rat and the maze before he taught it to her and Ben did some experiments on himself in these rooms and that is why he always seemed to know what was going to happen before it happened, he was never surprised in the past b/c he already knew but now he doesn’t know future events and like Locke before is left to follow someone else and take queue’s from them. He hates this, which is great irony.
I believe that C.W. had to be banished b/c his off island excursions were for his own greed and selfish reasons, that's why Ben said he wouldn't be as selfish as their leader – C.W. wanted it both ways, he started on the island working solely for it and then as the years passed his own ideas and lust became more important than that of the islands and therefore as a result it was Ben’s time to take over just as it is now Locke’s time. Ben can either choose to accept this or his fate will be similar to C.W.’s or worse, I’m guessing worse b/c Ben’s grip is so tight. Ben was allowed to be saved as a boy b/c he had a divine communion with the island just as Locke has now – wasn’t it kind of eerie how calmly confident Locke was in this episode about everything, his reincarnation solidified his purpose and unlike before how the island talked or guided him indirectly, now its direct. It think it is possible that all past leaders of the Others may of just been sta! nd-ins for the coming of the one true leader, the prophecy, the prodical son Locke – We’ll see though or maybe Jacob is the prophecy and Locke is the only key to releasing him, interesting…...
Sidenote: The Smoke Monster has been there judging Gods forever as was evident from the glyphs on the wall that Ben saw, I think the Egyptians actually came to the island for the sole purpose of being judged by the smoke monster, it's a holy land which has guided many important people to their places in history – maybe even if they survived the judgment it solidified their higher positions in their society at the time.
