This theory is a HUGE departure from any theory I've had. I'm normally big on "Whatever Happened, Happened" and until now thought that the Island was the true origin of man. But I had a thought last night that made me start to think differently. There are a few holes, and I will try to fill them the best I can but feel free to comment.
Bear with me because this is backwards from any theory I have ever read on this site but i promise it will answer some of the really big questions including the real origin of the 4 toed statue...
What if the island was created in the future as a way of saving the world. Let's say that in the future (to give a date we'll just say the year 10,000) man realizes that they are running out of time. In this future they decided that by trying to change the past they can save their existence. So they used all their technology to create an Island which can travel through time to the periods of other advanced civilizations in order to let them try and solve the 'equation' to stop the world from ending. The reason this was done in the future is let's say you know the world is going to end in 10 years. Instead of just sending someone back to just 1 place in time to save the future and hoping it works (like in terminator) you can send them to ALL preceding times and try to save the world multiple ways. HOWEVER, the problem is that sending people back through time all over the planet might cause problems and end up accelerating the end of the world. So they needed a way to c! ontrol the effects and not involve the outside world. This is why they needed an ISLAND that is VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND - so that the rest of the world is not affected.
So now for the statue explanation...
Assuming this future society is trying to save the world by using the knowledge of advanced cultures from all preceding points in time. In the modern world they have things like SCIENCE to coerce people but in some cultures they have FAITH. So if you were going to convince an advanced civilization (like the Egyptians) that is highly religious to try and solve problems you need to give them a god or gods. This was the reason the statue was erected. Egyptians were brought to the island and the first thing they saw was an enormous statue of a god with 4 toes.
NOW...why does the god have only 4 toes? Because people from the future only have 4 toes.
(Bear with me because there is a hole in this part of the theory which I am about to fill in. In a video podcast from a few seasons ago they said the 4 toed statue was supposed to have 6 toes but they changed it so that it was more noticeable...however I theorize that the writers hadn't fully researched evolutionary theory and realized that some scientist think that humans will evolve into being 4 toed instead of having 5 or 6 toes)
So, all of these people from the future would not be questioned in a society which worships them because their 4 toes elevate them to god-status. This is also why the others might speak latin. Possibly after the egyptians failed the others tried with the latin-speaking romans. Now the others speak english but having a second (dead) language is still useful for communicating secretly.
So who is from the future? Richard definitely. Maybe more people we haven't seen yet. I feel that the 'Others' were put on the Island to oversee the cultures which would be brought here to experiment and try to save the world. By implanting Richard and other people (who for some reason wouldn't age) in the past they would live throughout time to oversee this research at all periods of time. The 'Others' don't just guard the island, but the island's secret. I don't think all of the Others, or even their leaders knew this secret. By the time when the 815ers got to the Island maybe Richard is the only one left who still knows this secret. But he still needs people to protect the Island, which is the reason for the temple. This Temple is a last resort. It's the stronghold of the island through time travel and all other problems. This is why so few of the others (such as Alex and Juliet) had never been there.
During these more modern times Richard knew people needed something other then blind faith to believe him. So he allowed other leaders to be 'chosen' for him to manipulate. He uses them to continue his job of protecting the island and hoping to bring another smart group of people in time to the island to save the future. This was why the 'hostiles' let the Dharma Initiative on the island. Because Jacob/Richard said to. I'm not really sure what Jacob is, but I believe he serves the purpose of bringing people to the Island. Jacob also exists as another spiritual means of control in case people begin do doubt their calling to the island.
Also, at some point Richard had to protect the Others from themselves. After the Dharma initiative was purged he probably hoped the Others would continue the research. However we know at some point Ben focused their research to fertility, which Richard was not to excited about. He even told Locke that Ben was 'Wasting their time with fertility research" Richard probably brought Juliet there because he knew she had to come to the Island because she was there in the 70s so he brought her. He probably thought as a scientist herself she could help with his agenda, but when Ben stopped listening to Jacob (i'll get to that in a minute) he knew that Ben had to be removed and Juliet had to be booted from the Others camp.
So Jacob, the wheel, smokey and healing on the island...
The wheel was built in the future to allow people on the island to move it through time. This is kind of a fail-safe which allows for the same group of people experimenting to basically get another shot at saving the world. This allows endless attempts to save the future. It only has to be successful once and the island is a controlled environment. Smokey was made in the future and 'judges' people. It determines whether or not they are worthy or capable of protecting the island and it's secret. The healing abilities on the island come from the future because they need to keep people alive in order to continue research. I haven't quite put a label on Jacob, but he could be part of this future mystery. Maybe he's from the future like Richard. Maybe he's something like the smoke monster. Maybe he's just another excuse Richard needs to control people and uses 'future' technology to convince the leaders like Ben and Widmore to follow him.
How much of an M. Night Shyamalan ending would this be???
