My theory is a simple one concerning the nature of the Temple and goes someway in explaining the reason Richard Alpert does not seem to age. I only came up with this recently so I have not given it a lot of thought but I am bringing it forward mainly for discussion.
Ok, what if the Temple is a sort of construct that has the ability to sit outside of the flow of time, a vacuous bubble of some sort. The purpose of this bubble I have not really come to a conclusion on. Maybe to house something or someone of extreme importance. Also if Richard had access to the Temple and spent a significant amount of his time there, then he would appear not to age to the average time traveler who crosses his path every now and again.
Also this standing outside of time would give our 1977 losties the ability to ultimately end up in 2007 although they would have to wait 30 years within the walls for time to sync up, (which I don't think is going to happen). But if they were to be within the Temple when the Donkey wheel was turned who knows what may happen.
Like I said this is mainly thinking out loud and purely for discussion. Theory by Philip Lang
