So if you go back to last episode we got some good insight to the overall timeline.
First, we see Ben take a very young Alex in 1988. Perhaps 1989. Widmore was still on the island.
However Widmore didn't leave until after the Others took over the Barracks, so after the purge. Alex looked to be 4-6, so that puts him at least in 1992 when he left, maybe '94. That means it took Widmore only 10 years to find the island with the Freighter.
So what was Miles talking about when he said it took Widmore 20 years? Could it be he was referring to Widmore being almost 20 years old when he found the island as a young Man in the early 50's? Perhaps that means Widmore is actually the "clever fellow" who learned how to find it. Hummmmm.
More on Charles. Ben confronts him in public stateing that Charles frequently left the island and even fathered a daughter with an outsider. Since this confrontation happened post-purge, I thought at first that Charles had been leaving after that time on the sub, but then I remembered the reference to fathering a daughter. Penny had to have been born around 1970, which means Charles was leaving well before the purge. How did he do this? If he used the Donkey wheel, how did he get back? If he knew how to get back frequently, how come he can't now? There must be another way off the island. I guess.
We also saw Ethan in the 1988 Alex Kidnapping. That was pre-purge. So how did Ethan get to get with the Others prior to the purge? Did Ben kidnap him? Was Amy actually a spy and defected back with her baby? Come to think of it, why was Ben out in the woods with the Others in 1988 prior to the Purge. Shouldn't he be in Dharmaville with the DI?
And don't say the Purge happend before 88, because it clearly happened after he stole Alex.
Lastly, with Richard's strong statement to Charles in 1977 that Jacob ordered Ben to remain alive, we get confirmation that Jacob does in fact exist then, and is referred to as some sort of representative of the island. That means he existed well prior to '77.
Of course you could go out on a limb and say that he didn't exist, and Richard merely used Locke's reference to Jacob in 1954 as a means to trick Richard into believing in Jacob's orders. But then again, we've Jacob. So he exists somewhere. Theory by Locke4God
