I believe Smokey to be an interpretation of the deity Yog –Sothoth. If you wiki this name you will get more detailed info on it but anyway here’s my definition
Yog – Sothoth is the guardian to the gate, but is more specifically an outer god linked with all time and space, yet is supposedly locked outside of the universe we inhabit. He transcends time with past, present and future all combined into one and is a being of limitless self. Not merely an entity of one space time continuum, but allied to the ultimate essence of existence and unbound by mathematics and other factors. It appears to humans as a giant mass of iridescent globes and is usually accompanied by a blinding white light.
His main function is to manipulate the space time continuum and as far as lost is concerned this could mean appearing to humans and guiding or influencing their future actions. His ultimate goal remains unknown and it could be to let the old ones break through to this world again.
Who are the old ones? They could be an ancient advanced alien species who existed on this planet before humans and had some sort of association with this deity. Perhaps something terrible happened to this species causing their immediate extinction. Many years later primitive human societies would form and begin to worship this deity.
