I have ben thinking about the number of references to the Island as death and also about the boat on the bottom of the ocean.
I think that eletrocmagnetic feild around the island acts as a replicator or some sort of cloning device in much the same way Farady's expereint with the rats. the island magnetic feilds creates an alternte verion of the select people and they exisit in its reality.
Locke is still dead in the off island time line. Just as Chartlotte is still alive in another timeline.
I think that CHarles/Ben etc started meddling with its ecotics properotes and figured out how travel back and forth. The problem is that each time they did that they collpase a timeline which threatened the timespace continum. Jacob was the first to unearth the unique properties of the island and he's been trying to course correct of the jumping and damage ever since.
the list we heard of in the first season is list of individuals whp need to play a role in the course correction. Jack and Locke, do not yet know it but will help Jacob, just as they did before. The reason Jack unravelled off island is becaise he was in teh wrong timeline.
desmond is unique because he doesn't need to die/replicate like everyone else does.
