For the longest time, I have watched and considered what it is that the Others/Hostiles do all day on the island when they are not pitching their tents and moving form one location to the other. After Ben assumed control, he appears to have brought some purpose to the group in Otherville through house and garden projects, book clubs, making lists, stealing children and looking for the solution to the on-island pregnancy problem. But what did the Others do before Ben became the leader of the pack. And for that matter what else did they do when Ben was in charge.
If we assume that during the Dharma days the Others had little care or concern for what was being built on the island – a point I have made in other theories, and they appeared to have little interest in technology, then how did they not die from extreme island boredom? Let’s face it, after the first few walks around the jungle and the temple, what’s left? I am pretty certain that there were no slot machines and other similar diversions on the island, and I suspect Smokey would not allow such hedonistic pursuits.
Before Otherville was taken over, except for Richard the fashion plate, the rest of the group wore fairly old mono-colored rags and lived in make shift villages, consisting of tents and wash basins. For one of the most exclusive clubs, I see very little to entice members to join. It can’t be for eternal youth, as we see all but Richard age on the island. It can’t be for the pleasures of the worlds, as we see Widmore looking in all the wrong places for his scotch and women. It can’t be to raise a family, as all indications are that there were very few children activities and no children around unless they were stolen form someone else. It can’t be island seclusion, as they let the Dharma gang visit then move in and then become permanent tenants. In fact, they stood by while the ungrateful Dharmaites put up a very anti-social fence around their perimeter. They didn’t need Dharma for transportation off island as Richard apparently had no difficulty going back and for! th to visit little John Locke, well before Dharma arrived.
So what is it that they do on the island all day long? What exactly do they need a leader for if Richard the ageless one communes with Jacob? What is it that the island really wants? Why can’t they stay in one place? Why camp in the jungle when you have the temple at your disposal?
Based on recent episodes the answers to these questions are likely found in the temple and the many references to the “war.” But here is where this could take an interesting twist. Since Richard mentions Jacob when he took Ben in, Jacob was not created because of the so-called incident. The incident is a red-herring. Sure it has to happen, and will explain more of the story, but it will not explain Jacob and the wandering Others. I believe Christian and Jacob represent two different factions and possibly two different entities embodied in the island. One entity is represented by Christian and the other by Jacob. Smokey is the referee and makes certain when the players come in and out of the game and are eligible to play. The three make up the so-called three-headed deity.
As far as I can tell Ben has never seen Christian and he appeared to be genuinely surprised to learn of his existence. Both Richard and Ben’s focus has always been on Jacob. And when Christian appeared to Locke, Ben was not in the cabin. Remember Jacob’s “cry for help” in the cabin to Locke? Jacob was recruiting Locke – he needed his help. Later Christian recruits Locke for his purpose. We assume it was to get the 06 back, but was it to get Locke off the island? Just as it is Jacob who wants Widmore off the island. There is a war going on, but it is a war of control between the entities that are the island. We will soon find out where the 06ers and left-behinders fit in, but we will also find out what role they have been playing over the years. Theory by AndLost
