Hi All - My 2 cents. . .
I theorize that The pic of Anubis and the Smoke monster was an illustration of the surrendering of Anubis to the Monster. Meaning the 2 of them have done battle before and that particular time, the Monster won. I think these are the 2 sides at war, the monster or the black force and Anubis/Jacob the white force.
The Monster (dark force) won and has been "in control" as the winner for the past thousand years or so. (or for along time - i have no Idea if its 1000 years or whatever) His prize - the island, or rather the control of it. I think the island literally represents fate, more specifically mans fate, hence he who controls the island, controls mans fate.
Since the monster (dark force) has been in control, mans fate is on a course for self destruction. This path to self destruction was picked up by the scientists who devceloped the Valenzetti equation.
Thus The islands "will" - has been that of the monster since that triumph. The others, or original island inhabitants are doing the islands will, which is really the monsters will. Im sure the others have had to, a la Ben, do things in the name of the island, that seem dark and morbid to them, but they cannot question the acts they are asked to perform because its the islands will.
The war is not over, Anubis is mounting his comeback. Anubis/Jacob is trapped under ASH vigilance, but the white team is putting its pieces in place for another battle, for control of the island and its will.
I also think that the satues face is that of Jacob. Once jacob is revealed to us, they will show us the face of the statue rather quickly.
