First of all, i'm french so my english might look weird or too simple. Please understand. Anyway, i came with a theory, and i'm going to make it short!
I thinck the "agenda" works like this : Smokey has to find a body (a corpse) to become a character and to interact with the people in a "subtle way" (without sfx and death sentence).
So when christian arrived it was an occasion for smokey to "act" again. Now that John is dead (and i thinck he's dead!)smokey can do much more interactions, much more stuff for the purpose of the island , smokey can use locke as a "guide". In a way Christian was too suspicious to be efficient in this rôle. He was just creepy.
So i thinck we're not going to see christian that much (only in special occasions)... For me the shoes makes sense / as a symbol / Now locke is in the shoes of Christian, he has to take his role.
ANd now (it's getting more risky), I thinck locke has allready saved Jacob. Jacob is linked with smokey but we don't know Why, how, etc. I thinck that Christian, taking the place of jacob in his Cabin, was allready a big change in the island way of "working". Now that john is dead, he's the chosen one, the one smokey is going to use to save the island.
So it makes me thinck that jacob is somebody doing a dirty and complicated job since ages. He had a special conection with the island (like locke), and was used by smokey even after his own death. The " smokey deads" are conscient of the situation, and jacob can't continue this life between two worlds. For him Locke is a relief.
