I've been thinking back to the whole introduction of jughead as a big player in the lost mythology. so this may be a thriow away concept but I'll see how far my imagination can stretch.
For me no to sound like a raving lunatic we assume:
1)the huge chunk of concrete behind the swan is an encased nuke
2)we are still in the same universe or "timeline" as we've always been
After Desmond turned the safety key in the swan I believe that resulted in the explosion of jughead. You cannot have that much energy released next to an active nuke and expect everything to be alright. Upon detonation of jughead it interacted with whatever exotic matter or "pure energy source" that the swan is built upon which caused a time shift.
so everybody travelled in time when the sky turned purple? ... nope ... the resulting explosion from the nuke travelled into the future... or past ... which could be intertwined with the valenzetti solution theory kickin around here. So for mine to work, we assume it went into the future since there is no sign of nuke damage in the islands past (that we've seen).
why do I care about the fate of the island? I don't but i figure if someguy turning a donkey wheel would cause time skips ... a nuke would prolly do the same ... so you are looking at one explosion appearing and reappearing in several different places at different times, moving around with the island, maybe even existing in multiple places at once... ouch.
now Desmond gained the ability to alter a straight ahead timeline through turning the failsafe key. he was given this ability in order to alter the timeline, travel back in time and course correct himself from either turning the key, prevent jughead of being buried etc... This brings up the whole free will vs. fate thing throughout the show.
I think widmore and Ben's feud is simply between them while they are both being forced to work to course correcting the past via desmond. They are intertwined in a selfish battle to have leadership over the indigenous properties of the island (that box ben was talkin bout in season 3, healing properties etc...)
now the other option that comes to mind is that the explosion went into the past, and thus someone has been constantly preventing the timeline from course correcting for however long it takes ("how old is richard?" "old") This person would be waiting for someone's arrival on the island who could permanently alter the timeline and avoid the explosion
