Theory Many people are supposing there are 2 timelines. Often when this idea comes up many are quick to dismiss it. I for one am. Sure, there are certain things that have been different slightly as some have pointed out....the numbers heard as 316 was going down, the welcome dock in disarray as a couple of the few examples people have pointed out. In a prior theory Ben's death was mentioned as a course correction and one response stated if that's the case the series we've seen thus far was imaginary or was a dream ala "Dallas". It's not so much that it has been imaginary so far, but rather we have seen things that DID happen, just not the way they were supposed to. We've seen the altered timeline happen so far. Now begins the course correcting.
As unacceptable as it may seem for there to be 2 timelines to people (I, for one)...really though, why couldn't there be? Think about this....Sawyer is on the island in 1977 & he should also be an 8 year old boy off the island in '77. 2 Sawyers. In the beginning of this season an episode showed some losties walking thru the jungle when they saw the light from the hatch shining in the sky. Locke then said we'd better go around, remember? Because he remembered Boone and himself were there and he wanted to avoid himself. 2 Lockes! If there aren't 2 Lockes present then and there, at that time, then which Locke isn't there? If Locke is with Sawyer and company at that time (jump) then he can't be at the hatch with Boone, right? If he is at the hatch with Boone then he can't be in the jungle at that same time with Sawyer to see the light shining in the sky from the hatch.
Keeping in mind the absurd idea there are 2 Lockes, there have been many subtle hints of duality, such as Charlie appearing to Hurley saying he's dead but he's also here. Locke blowing up the sub but mysteriously having wet clothes. Locke asking Ben how his dad got there and Ben replying,"You tell me. You brought him here." And the biggest hint of all on duality...the 2 rabbits appearing at the same time in the comic-con orientation video! Recall Chang yelling to keep them seperate? Here's a good one to ponder while on this 2 Lockes subject. What if the 2 Lockes switched places at some point, somehow?
To close this theory I'd like to propose that many of the flashbacks we've seen so far have been from 2 different timelines, one that did happen and one that happened but wasn't supposed to, hence the course correction. We've kinda been led to believe all the flashbacks are from one continuous storyline, or street as Farady put it, rather than pieces of 2 different ones thru editing. Tricky editing has been pulled off very convincingly before in the episode "Ji Yeon", where it appears to be a concurrent story but actually Jin's part was in the past and Sun's in the future. The dual flashbacks could also help explain the uncanny, coincidental interactions of losties before the crash of 815.
Honestly....2 timelines. How ridiculous! Theory by Frost Bitten
