Apologies if this idea has been posted before... I must admit that I didn't really side with the "What Happened Happened" believers initially, as to me the Dharma/Othersville that Sun saw in the future did seem different to what we had seen previously. However, then I started thinking about Michael...
We saw him off-Island being told by Tom that he couldn't kill himself because 'the Island wouldn't let him', as was proved with his gun not firing etc. I hated this idea of a magic Island being able to affect events in the 'outside world', and I've now come to question what was meant by 'the Island won't let you'...
Michael plays a role in the eventual escape of the Oceanic 6 from the Island, some of whom then travel to the past to perhaps shape the future destiny of the Island, the same destiny that Michael and the rest of the Oceanic survivors will experience. So, for him to kill himself before boarding the freighter would cause a paradox, as he'd be perhaps stopping the Oceanic 6 from escaping (and from providing Ben with information too).
So it's not the Island stopping him from killing himself - it's fate. Causality. Tom may be wise to this if Ben has given him information regarding some of the Oceanics eventually travelling to the past, so can more easily manipulate Michael to go back to the Island (rather than just telling him it's his destiny to allow some of his friends to travel back in time!)
I think this may ultimately prove that WHH, which is a shame as I loved the theory about the notebooks from the Pearl landing in an empty field because the future had been changed and a station where they would have ended up hadn't been built! Theory by Dr8Ball
