I think it is possible that Adam and Eve are Charles Widmore and Ellie. Jack said that Adam and Eve died probably 40 or 50 years ago. From the date when Jack said that (2004) that would be 1954 or 1964.
1954 is the only time when anything of note happened on The Island (that we know of currently) and it involved Widmore and Ellie.
As Ellie and Widmore seem to have had (if not still have in some ways) high statures on the island (as implied by the dialogue between Richard and what's-his-face in "What Happened, Happened" before Ben and Richard go to the Temple), it seems as if the somewhat magical properties of The Island may be able to continue in them. This would be especially true if, as Widmore said, Ben tricked him into leaving, but Widmore hadn't actually broken any of The Island's rules.
It is also possible that the "trick" that was played on Widmore was Ben killing him. That also may be why Ben mentions that he can't kill Widmore when we see them in that dark hotel room in "The Shape of Things to Come".
I literally just thought of this theory about ten minutes ago, so it may be crap, and there may be evidence that I haven't suggested to support it, and may be tons to refute it that I haven't thought of. Theory by Tom
