After watching "Some Like It Hoth", I think Hurley was the one who made the numbers bigger than they had to be. I subscribe to the theory that Whatever Happened, Happened.
When we first saw the numbers it was in the first season. Hurley won the lottery by using them, which he heard from a crazy loon named Leonard at the looney bin. Leonard heard them on a radio transmission out in the Pacific. Hurley found out the numbers were on Danielle's map and on the hatch. Then he finds out these same numbers are the code for stopping the countdown in the Swan station.
I think the numbers being put on the hatch were just that, random numbers. But Hurley heard them being put on, and they stuck in his mind. I think at some point Hurley will suggest them to his new friend, Marvin Candlewax Chang or whatever his real name is. Possibly for the computer countdown. And at some point, Hurley will actually record the radio transmission that we first heard in the pilot.
As a result of this, the numbers curse is finally lifted as Hurley comes to realize that he was the cause of his own misery. His biggest nemesis on the show has always been the numbers, and he turns it from a curse to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whatever happened, happened, even 4-8-15-16-23-42!
