-Bens claim that he was born on the island in his eyes isnt a lie, however he does remember everything from before being shot as evidenced by the dolls annie gives him. He considers his experience in the temple with richard as his "rebirth" into the person he is now. Which is why richard said that ben will lose his innocence and always be "one of us" So that shows why ben feels so attached because the island gave him life just like the mother the he never knew and feels the need to hold onto it and not lose it like he lost his mother.
