Theory is simple, and occurred to me out of the blue this morning:
Assumptions:
1) Horace Godspeed built Jacob's cabin as a "getaway"
2) Horace is with DHARMA
3) There is a truce between The Others and DHARMA, involving territory on the island
4) Territory needs landmarks, boundaries
5) We don't know if the sonic fence encompasses all of DHARMA's territory, or just the barracks.
6) We don't know if the ash line is a circle, or what it encompasses.
So if Horace is going to build a getaway cabin, it follows that he's going to build it within DHARMA's territory on the island, but probably as far away from DHARMA as he can safely get. How will The Others mark the boundary between DHARMA territory and Other's territory? Perhaps a line of ash would work well. It would also be nice and dramatic, should the producers ever choose to show us its creation; Richard and Co. could line out some flammable materials and set them on fire, resulting in a flaming wall that DHARMA must not cross. When the fanfare is over, what is left is a line of ash through the jungle.
I wanted the ash to be something mystical, holding Jacob within, but its probably just a line. Theory by Mr. Snazz
