Inspired by Skipmanii's theory on Aaron not "being real" to Kate. Think about this my friends:
If you think about Hurley and Miles's conversation about time travel. That scene starts with Hurley staring at his hand waiting for it to disappear, Marty McFly style. Then he goes ahead to stump Miles on a paradox about how a future Ben doesn't remember a past Sayid shooting him. Then I read a neat theory about the "magic bullet" that hits Ben and the wound appears to be in different locations on his body relative to whoever is looking at him at the time (Sayid sees the heart, Jin sees the chest, and Sawyer sees the abdomen). Also mentioned in this theory I read is the Swan having the bed and other items either non-existant, or in different places depending on who was down there. This is all pointing to the one simple fact that the island's magic "course correction" tool is altering people's perceptions only, to inspire their actions. I mean, we already know the island can alter reality for people by having smokey appear as different apparitions. So why can't the island alt! er people's perceptions on and off the island to inspire your actions as well?
So what if you really can change the past, and smokie is the tool that is designed to enforce "Whatever Happened, Happened" as in he works night and day to keep you from changing the past. And if you stop smokie from doing his work, you can freely alter things in time and space.
See I always thought the title of WH,H is cleverly designed to throw us off. What the most important part of this is what physically makes WH,H? Many people agree smokey is the course corrector, and kills people who aren't "supposed" to be there. When smokey
"judges" you he's scanning the past and future and determining your place in the events of time. If you serve no purpose anymore, to providing inspiration to those who travel back, smokie will destroy you. Eko had faith in the button, but Locke lost it. The button was supposed to not be pressed, which lead to everything as in Desmond saving Charlie to the point the freighter can come back. Eko survived smokie's wrath once during the stare down, being that his purpose was still to inspire Locke to have faith. I could go on about Eko, smokie, and the dream with Boone, but you can see from this there's a strong case that smokie will do what it needs to do to allow the correct passage of events for WH,H.
On this note, what if certain actions of the Losties in the 1977 realm are changing the way people are perceiving Aaron in the future to inspire the course of events so that Kate goes back, etc... Sometimes people can see him, sometimes people can't. Or even more freaky is that what if you can actually change things, and Aaron is sparking in and out of existance because the past keeps changing. Hear me out... What if part of the "war" that is coming is between the light and dark sides we know about from season one. Locke hints at it, two sides, one light, one dark. The parallels in the show are OVERWHELMING. Adam and Eve are representative of the sides with the black and white stones in their posession.
So, is this war a war of protecting time? It is so that the light side can force whatever happened, to happen, and possibly use smokie to course correct the actions that the dark side are performing to upset the balance. Or is it that smokie is a disruption tool of the dark side, who can see the future, and attempts to change it. I personally still believe smokie preserves the timeline.
Since Aaron and Claire are with Christian, it's safe to assume that they are on the same side of this battle. It's pretty obvious that Christian and Richard are on different sides of the fence since they obviously don't interact in the 5 seasons we've known them. If this war is fought, and the dark side changes the past, they can win. What if in the past, the dark side upset the balance by trapping Jacob (who was on the light side) and forever have been in control forcing whatever happened, to still happen. They have used smokie to course correct things to always happen a certain way, the wrong way, the unbalanced way.
What if this whole chain of events now is designed around bringing Aaron back vs not bringing him back? Christian and Claire don't want him there, but Ben obviously wants them all to go back. What if this war is over that little boy for whatever mystical purpose he serves. What if Aaron is the future warrior of the dark side, as Ben was the future warrior of the dark side when he was a kid. Ben and Richard know this, and in their failed attempts at producing children of their own accord on the island, are trying to get children to be the future dark army. Christian brings Claire over to the light side, and together they are inspiring events to happen which are preventing Aaron from going back, while tailoring John Locke to be a leader for the good side. Ben is trying to sway John to be with him on Richard's side, and it is my belief that in seasons 5 and 6 we will see John Locke rise as a warrior for the light side, and restore the balance, free Jacob, and fight to prevent A! aron from bring that dark force Claire seems to know about.
