Sorry if this has been said already, and if its a little confusing; its my first post...
With all of the time travel that was introduced i think one of the things that has been emphasized the most has been the rule that "what happened happened", meaning that if Sawyer didn't talk to Kate and Claire during Aaron's birth the first time something will stop him from being able to do it this time. All people have to follow this rule except one, Desmond.
For whatever reason Desmond has the ability to break this rule of time travel he is now able to change the "original" time line. The first thing Desmond has done with his new found powers was save Charlie's life several times. Finally Charlie agreed to submit himself to a death that SHOULD save all of his new friends; drowning in the Looking Glass. Since Charlie made this sacrifice the Losties were able to get in contact with the freighter leading to the O6, Desmond, and Frank leaving the island.
We learned when Charlie entered the looking glass that the code to turn off the looking glass jamming device was programmed by a musician, and since Charlie was a musician he was able to figure it out. So Charlie, being the only musician on the island (as far as we know), is the only one who can possibly turn off the jamming, leading to the rescue of the 8.
This all was only possible because Desmond changed the "original" time line by keeping Charlie alive long enough to turn off the jaming. Had Desmond not interfered with what SHOULD have happened Charlie would have died sooner, whoever swam down to the Looking Glass wouldn't be able to turn it off, and the freighter would never have been able to make contact so no one could have left. This change of the original time line is the reason the 06 had to return, why Frank was on the plane (he too had to return) and why the island isn't finished with Desmond.
Now only two other people from 815 have left the island; Micheal and Walt. As we know Micheal returned and died in an attempt to make up for what he had done to leave. Walt however was safe in New York with his grandmother. When Micheal and Walt originally left the island it was before Desmond interfered with the time line. Since Desmond never changed anything to make it possible for the father and son to leave it was part of the original time line. Since it was part of the original time line there is no course correcting needed for Walt. He is where he is supposed to be, in New York. Theory by ST
