The future changed because Ben is dead. All the theories regarding how Ben lives, or how the future didn't change (aka that wasn't the barracks Sun and Frank visited) are being written by folks who are either in denial or simply watching a different show.
If that was meant to be old NewOthertown, why dress it up like spooky abandoned Dharmaville? If Ben was meant to live, why shoot him at close range in the heart?
But but but... COURSE CORRECTION!
Seriously, don't you people get it yet? Course-correction isn't an artifact of the time-space continuum... the people vying for control of/over the eyeland (Ben and Chucky) are undoing each others time changes. Theoretically, time travel is completely possible today but only if you can somehow harness "near-limitless" energy to power whatever device will create your wormhole and keep it open. Course-correction isn't mentioned in the reputable physics journals because there is no such thing. If you can make it to the past, you can change it. Have fun and send a postcard (with winning lotto numbers).
So, if you are Charles and you need to kill an unkillable opponent, you will need to do so in the past. Once Ben has the ability to see the future (from learning about it in his past from the future losties) he becomes near impossible to kill. (and vice versa for chucky, hence the stalemate) Getting Sayid back in the 70's to kill Ben "pre-future-aware" is the only way to break the stalemate.
Now... that isn't to say that at some point in the future someone like Locke might not decide to take a jaunt back to the disco era and hand young Ben a bulletproof vest mere seconds after he releases the burning van... you know, just in case kid... wink wink. Theory by Albert Awol
