Whatever happened happened!
So the likes of Sawyer, Jin, Miles, Jack etc were always members of Dharma and I'm sure Ben and Widmore knew this as they met them on the island when they were younger. I think future episodes will confirm meetings between these characters. I think young Ben will meet the losties in Dharma get up and he will uncover their future knowledge or they will help him in some way which will eventually lead to him acheiving his goal, which is the purge.
I think it is Ben and Widmores knowledge of the past that is the key.
I know Locke believes that everyone is on the island for a reason and it is fate, but I believe that both Ben and Widmore have had to work their socks off to get everyone on that island for a reason..... so they can be a part of the past (the time loop).
It was therefore imperative in the future to get all the Oceanic Dharmas onto the plane and subsequently onto the island. This is why other people have been killed by smokey (either they were not needed anymore, were not relevant for the future to play out as it was meant to be, or they were in danger of altering it). So It was both Ben and Widmore who realised that for events to run as they should they needed to get all those people involved in the main story onto the Island. Abbadon said to Locke "I help people get to where they need to be" and he was working for Widmore. Widmore understands the importance of the story playing out - although I feel he needs to do this up to a certain point before he can step in and alter the future to his advantage, whereas Ben needs the story to play out as it is meant to be so he can carry out the purge.
This is the first time I've wrote a theory and I expect it to get scrutinised..... especially when I think that BEN IS JACOB!!!...... but thats another story. Theory by Limpet
