It was adequately explained in 'Flashes before your eyes', and the notion has been returned to frequently via Charlie's postponed 'deaths', that the universe has a way of course correcting.
No matter what Eloise would have done, the man with the boldly fashionable red shoes would have died.
No matter what Desmond did, eventually, Charlie was going to die.
But let's look at a reverse hypothetical analogy:
What if someone had died who, in terms of the way 'the universe' sees things, wasn't supposed to?
This is where my offbeat theory begins(and I know this goes against current 'spoiler' threads, but spoilers have been inaccurate in the past. Red herrings do exist).
What if Amy's baby turns out to be Jacob? What if something that happens, either the 'Incident' or the 'Purge' ends up killing Jacob...except, the universe never wanted Jacob to die in the first place? The first and only child conceived and born on the island(in as far as we, the audience, are aware). Jacob is truly special.
The only way for the universe to course correct a death is to loop time. The reverse is easier for the universe. Just keep throwing things at Charlie until something eventually hits the target and 'Wham'! He's dead. But to undo a death that was never supposed to happen? You need to have a loop in time.
Whatever happened, happened is true then. Daniel did warn young Charlotte and scare the bejeezus out of her. Jin did get a better grasp of English in the 70s. Sawyer did put on a paisley dress shirt and pick a flower for Juliet. But only because Jacob died and the universe needs to course correct.
So, because what 'didn't happen' happened, a whole bunch of what 'happened' had to happen. Make sense?
The only way to get the loop to stop is to make sure Jacob lives.
This could be analogous to the Christian Myth of Herrod and Jesus. What if Herrod had killed ALL the male children born in Jerusalem and Jesus hadn't gotten away? Jesus had to fulfill that prophecy. So, the universe, or 'God', in this example, would have had some reset for getting things corrected and Jesus out of Jerusalem.
The way I see it, Widmore may turn out to be the Herrod in all of this. Ben may turn out to be the proverbial 'Judas' as well. I think John Locke, in this analogy, would be a perfect "John the Baptist"
And, for what it's worth, I think Aaron will turn out to be the Economist. He'll sacrifice his life of future fun and technology to free his mom, Jack, Kate, et al from this loop.
This also explains Jacob's affinity for Horace's Cabin. It was his Daddy's Cabin! :DTheory by Lojack_Recycles
