The idea that certain characters are special has been a main piece of the mythology behind Lost since the first season. I think we have been slowly hinted at what being "special" truly means but since this is Lost it has been wrapped in mystery for 5 seasons. From what I can best describe being Special means that the person has the ability to view, effect, or intervene with the space/time continuum.
Walt was the first to be called special in Season 1. From the episode properly entitled "Special", we learn from Walt's step father that "sometimes when he's around, things happen". Earlier in that episode we see Walt grow frustrated with his mother and step father and it appears that he summons a bird from a book that he is reading. Walt has also appeared as an apparition to several people to deliver messages when he was elsewhere either on the island or off island. In the Mobisode "Room 23" Ben and the others are terrified to enter the room with Walt. Ben claims that Walt is special and that Jacob wanted him there. Most recently Walt has been having dreams of the immanent future seeing Locke on the island in a suit surrounded by people with guns. I think the island needs Walt and he will return to the island in Season 6 to help Locke. He was trained by Locke as a boy and can throw a knife like a champ so lets see Walt save the island and get some redemption for his father.!
Desmond is referred to as uniquely special by Daniel Faraday. When Desmond turned the fail safe key at the end of season 2 he was positioned at the center of an implosion of dark matter/electromagnetic energy. This dislodged his mind from time and gave him the ability to alter the space/time continuum. Desmond can change events in history but he is not as powerful as the island itself. He can change things to an extent but only as long as the island or Jacob approves... as seen with Charlie's unchangeable death in season 3.
Hurley was always considered crazy until recent seasons. For a while his condition seemed to be that he had imaginary friends which he spoke to and treated like real people but now it has become more apparent that he is a psychic medium. He has been talking to dead people so much that he even thinks Locke is dead when he comes to visit him in "The Life and Death...". I am a true believer that his imaginary friend Dave from Season 2 was most definitely Libby's dead husband trying to get Hurley out of the mental asylum and on his way to the island. I can't wait to learn Libby's story...
It's obvious that Miles is a psychic medium. He is very skilled in communicating with the dead and seems to have mastered the art of making money off of exorcisms. This ability stems from him being born on the island, I believe he is the son of Pierre Chang who we have seen has a baby boy in the early 70s. Miles in 100% special.
Jack has been witness to several miracles in his life. Coincidence? Not on Lost. Jack can heal people and fix things in the space/time continuum. He admits to not fixing his wife's spine yet because of being so focused on wanting to heal her, he did just that. He has brought back numerous characters from near death experiences and never even stopped to look back and realize.
I think Ben was once a faithful protector of the island but he has since fallen upon bad graces. He made a few mistakes due to his lack of maturity and was banished by Jacob but Ben defected. During his time as leader of the others he became aware of some very resouceful tools of the island. He learned of a way to contain Jacob (ashes surrounding the cabin / smokey) and resisted leaving the island until he had no other choice. Alpert referred to Ben as very special, similar to the way he implies that John is special. So we know for a fact that Ben has abilities. Whether that be that he has dreams of his future or he is a wild card like Desmond and he can alter the course of history... we do not yet know.
Juliet is NOT special. She has knowledge on the truth behind the word special. She wouldnt enter room 23 with Walt for a reason and she told Michael in another mobisode that "Walt is not an ordinary boy". She is holding back alot of info from Sawyer and crew and I think its only a matter of time before she explains it for us.
John Locke is the most special of all because he was chosen by the island itself. His whole life has been a test to prepare him for his role as the leader of the island. A war is coming and John Locke is going to be in the middle of it. When Ben and Widmore's teams come face to face John Locke is the only one left to take them both down and protect the well being of the island. That is with the help of his fellow 815/316 survivors many of whom are special and may have been picked by Jacob as well.
