Since it is Stop Lurking Day, if figured I would post a theory.
I was just reading ObFuSc8's theory about Ben. If you have not read the theory it basically says that Ben meets the losties as a child in Dharma times and because of this, he knew that they would be coming when he got older. They probably also told him about the time flashes, so he knew they were coming soon after the freighter.
So ObFuSc8's theory (which I think is spot on) got me thinking about the reason Ben turned the FDW instead of Locke. We know that the flashes affected people based on their exposure to the island. If Ben was present during the flashes, he wouldnt have lasted a day before the nosebleed got him. He spent decades on the island, while Charlotte, who was on it only a few years started getting nosebleeds immediately and died in about 3 days.
I think this, along with maybe some other motives, was the reason that Ben took it upon himself to turn the wheel. He knew what would happen with the flashes and knew it was the only way to survive.
To poke holes in my own theory, I have to mention this. Im not sure there would have even been flashes if Locke had turned the wheel. We are meant to assume that Ben knocking it off its axis caused the flashes. Would it have happened if Locke turned it? Theory by atomic65
