Ok guys so I was talking to my dad about Lost (Yep i got him and some cousins into it) and we talked a bit about who was the Good guy and Bad guy between Ben and Widmore.
Originally in the Episode TLADOJB, Widmore tells John about a War coming, so naturally one would assume between Ben and Widmore. But then I got thinking, what if its a World War, outside the Island instead?
This may seem a bit far fetched, but think a little bit about the Lost Experience. In this, we learned that the original purpose of the DI was to work on the Valenzetti equation and see how they can modify the equation to postpone the end of humanity. In this case, it is imperative for John to be back in the island before it happens, and possibly be of importance to prevent it.
Now it seems to me that with all of Widmore's power and resources, he could come to the island whenever he would wish (he could have boarded the plane with the rest). What would a multibillionare's ambition be to get back to it? Perhaps then Widmore's ultimate purpose or goal is to prevent the End of Humanity from happening, by reinstating a new DI to work there again (As seen in the last break and Comic Con). My guess is Ben and/or Jacob want the end to happen, and the Island be the last remaining sanctuary for humanity. Ben may see things differently, in which in a Machiavellic way, he sees humanity as something that has to be destroyed to be rebuilt.
Ok its a bit farfetched and out there, but its my first try and its just a theory. I think it would be maybe a bit too scifi for the main audience though. Theory by D
